California certainly has its share of drama junkies, and they indulge their jones for the emotional highs and lows of ill-advised romance and bold-faced betrayal right out in the high-noon sunshine. A sudsy mix of soap and sand, Malibu Beach (1978) takes the basic dramatic conceit of the standard daytime melodrama, plays the arch villainy for laughs, pumps up the quotient of jiggling-but-firm breast flesh, and pops those quivering melons from the bikini tops that try in vain to contain them. A tale of misplaced affections and well-meaning machinations, Malibu Beach is light, breezy, and glowing with orbicular delight.
