Every little town has a small population of big stories, especially the 24 townsfolk of Hereabouts, Alabama, the fictional epicenter of Stalled (2000). Director Stefan Haves and writer Mindy Wieinberg create a cast of semi-rural archetypes and bus in a van load of stranded big-city musicians, who in their anxiety to get back on the road to New Orleans stir up the thwarted ambitions and postponed dreams of everyone from the pining garage mechanic to the world-class beauty who just happens to be the waitress at the only diner within range of a coon-hunt gunshot. The myriad characters intersect, intertwine and mostly fail to connect, much like the convoluted highway stories the town’s traveling pharmaceutical salesman brings home for his world-shy daughter.
