Fresh off Freeway (1996), a modern retelling of the Little Red Riding Hood story, director Matthew Bright further develops his interest in adults-only kid’s tales with Freeway 2: Confessions of a Trickbaby (1999). Modeled after Hansel and Gretel, the salacious story stars Natasha Lyonne as an armed bandit who manages to finagle an escape from jail with the aid of her lesbian serial-killer cellmate (Marķa Celedonia). The bad girls follow a depraved breadcrumb trail of sex and violence, until a transgendered nun (Vincent Gallo) decides to teach them a lesson. Though they’re more often than not completely blood-splattered, Lyonne, Celedonia, and cohort Chera Bailey all show scintillating skin in scenes that live up to their fairy-tale promise.
