Review
Plenilunio (2000) is a Spanish thriller about a killer of young girls, but is much more, as it focuses on the detective assigned to the case. The name, which translates plenilune, meaning full moon, relates to the fact that the full moon triggers the killer. A 12-year-old girl is found naked and bruised. The cause of death was choking from her panties being shoved into her mouth. There were no traces of semen. This is the case Miguel Ángel Solá is confronted with, and, as he watches the autopsy, he becomes dedicated to solving the crime. He has just been reassigned to the city, after many years in Basque country. The constant threats there put his wife in an insane asylum, and caused him to become a drunk and loose faith in nearly everything.
In the course of the investigation, he meets the victim's teacher, Adriana Ozores, who is a divorced mother of one. The two immediately have chemistry. Now, he is not only doing a job he feels matters, but he is becoming involved with a woman he can truly love. We learn the identity early on of the killer, so the only suspense is if he will kill again before he is caught.
I don't know if it was her performance, or her personally, but I was totally charmed by her, and she is not at all hard to look at. As a crime drama, it was rather weak, but as a character driven drama and love story, it was much stronger. I liked it a lot, but then, for ninety minutes, I was madly in love with Ozores. This is a strong C.
Nudity Report: Ozores shows breasts in a very passionate sex scene.
Critics Vote: It was nominated for 5 Goyas including best actor and best actress.
IMDb Summary: IMDb readers have it at 6.2 of 10.
DVD Info: It is only available on Region 2 PAL. The transfer is good, and much of the scenery is photogenic. In Spanish with English subtitles.
