It’s the Middle Ages in France, and poor Julie Delpy is eager for her father to get back from the Crusades. Too bad that she isn’t ready when Dad turns out to be a bitter old knight who’s completely lost any sense of morality. He’s really kind of a bitter old yuppie, and his whole family ends up having to suffer under the creep. Director Bertrand Tavernier does a fine job of capturing the misery of the Middle Ages with The Passion of Beatrice (1988), but we’d still gladly give up our modern conveniences to see Julie’s jolly jugs jousting against each other.
