Review

Exiled from the German Democratic Republic, activist author Thomas Brasch picked up a camera soon after landing in West Germany and set about creating the melancholy film poem Domino (1982). Brasch’s drama chronicles the rise and fall of a talented actress (Katharina Thalbach) who attempts to forge a successful career in a country whose political and cultural future is perpetually in limbo. Shot in high-contrast black and white, the film balances its political themes with breathtaking imagery. Thalbach and supporting beauties Anne Bennent, Julia Lindig, and Andrea Plany keep things accessible by injecting some much-needed erotic sizzle.
