Work is meant to free us from care. Our minds are released from the torments of free will when we focus our concentration upon an appointed task, and the money we are paid eases our anxiety over financial ruin, but what of the poor sap who takes a job that brings him only more torment and complications? Such is the fate of the fifteen-year-old hero of Deep End (1970). Though little more than a boy, Mike suffers the torments of a grown man when he takes a job at an urban bathhouse and falls under the cruel sway of a redheaded temptress in the ripe fullness of her mid-twenties. The kid’s work-related obsession leads him to stalk his object of desire through London’s nastiest strip joints and fleshpots.
