Susan Sarandon and her famous funbags make their film debut as a junkie-loving mental patient in this landmark statement on Vietnam-era America. Peter Boyle plays the title character, a factory worker who drinks beer, talks a lot of sense and, oh, does he hate hippies. After Sue's business exec father kills her skanky long-haired boyfriend in a fit of rage, the addled dad hooks up with Joe in a Manhattan barroom. This is the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Pops and the hard-hat comb Greenwich Village in pursuit of Sue among the free-love dope-fiends of the day. Talk about finding a freakin' needle in a freak-out haystack! Don't miss the scene where the two upstanding citizens crash a hippie pot party--and they don't check their guns at the door.
