Set in Fascist Italy, Occhiali d’oro, Gli (1987) is a tale of persecution and loss. When the Nazis come to power, a Jewish family and a gay man find that they are the object of society’s scorn as they go about their daily lives. Here, a difficult subject is treated with great sympathy and humanity. It’s dark, but you also get a nice shot of Valeria Golino’s itty-bitties.
