A grim kitchen-sink drama with a stark social message, Francesco Maselli's Storia d’amore (1986) chronicles the debilitating effects of poverty on an innocent, well-meaning young woman. Since the tender age of thirteen, Bruna (Valeria Golino) has had to work around the clock cooking and cleaning to support her family. As she approaches womanhood, Bruna realizes that a capable man could be her ticket off of skid row. Before long she’s buck naked, auditioning suitors in a series of ravishing, if sometimes heartbreaking, sex scenes.
