A modern adaptation of the first volume in Marcel Pagnol's famed Marseilles trilogy, Marius (2000) tells of a Frenchman who resists marrying his sweetheart because it jeopardizes his wish to become a sailor. Eric Poulain stars as Marius, the tragic fool who decides that he’d prefer the drudgery of a life at sea to the supple flesh of his dear Fanny (Gaela Le Devehat). When the young woman is proposed to by the wealthy Honore Panisse, Marius is given one last chance to reconsider, but he still passes up the broad. Although she plays a Fanny, Le Devehat pulls a fast one by flashing her rack but keeping her buns under wraps--a compromise that’s easy to live with.
