One of the hardest lessons of higher education is that teachers don’t know everything. The female community-college professor of A Night in Heaven (1983), for instance, can’t even figure out if she would be better off remaining supportive and nurturing at the side of her downer of a husband, or if she should intensify her tutoring of the privates of one of her failing students, a macho kid who also happens to be a male stripper stud-muffin. Life does not come with an instruction manual. Sometimes the answers to the most perplexing questions of existence are delivered by the most unschooled of messengers.
