Women can be every bit as sexually predatory as the stereotyped male, and the erotic prowling of nine young ladies who have just worn through their first blush of youth is the basis for the thematic interplay of Amoureuse (1992). The title of French director Jacques Doillon’s tale of post-college gal friends who have gathered at the beach home of one of their number’s absent parents to celebrate a birthday and pursue erotic diversions is loosely translated to mean Women in Love. A more accurate summation might be several desirable and slightly disillusioned women in a mode of toying with the aroused expectations of whatever acceptable males come along, until one particular catch ensnares the imaginations of three competing seductresses.
