Esteemed Spanish filmmaker Gonzalo García Pelayo made his directorial debut with the scathingly political film Manuela (1976). Based on a novel by Manuel Halcón, the film addresses the Franco regime’s brutal abuses of power in chronicling an Andalusian couple’s stormy romantic affair. Charo López and Fernando King play the thwarted lovers who manage to get one eyebrow-raising sex scene in before Big Brother comes knocking. López’s seductive reveal is pretty pleasing, but co-star Carmen Platero gives her a run for her money with a bit of nude primping.
