The gritty slice-of-unusual-life Carny (1980) chronicles what happens when eighteen-year-old Donna (Jodie Foster) gets bored with waitress work and happens upon a carnival. She meets Frankie (Gary Busey), a clown who taunts customers at the dunk tank, and Patch (Robbie Robertson), the traveling show's manager. Swept up by the romantic notion of life on the road, Donna joins the carnival. Carny began as a documentary, which adds to the movie's air of authenticity, but it's Jodie's moment as a lingerie-clad dancing girl that really puts the big pole in this tent.
