Review
A literature teacher in a small provincial town is swept into a love triangle with a pretty bar girl and a wealthy heir in the gallant Spanish romantic drama Son de mar (2001). Bigas Luna’s esteemed arthouse film stars Jordi Mollà as Ulises, a bookish young man who makes a big splash upon arriving in a snug seaside hamlet. Martina (Leonor Watling) views the newcomer as a means for escape and positions herself to become pregnant by him in order to flee her marriage to a wealthy cad (Eduard Fernández). Luna’s scorching tale is marked by tragedy and death, but passion’s what it boasts in spades. Watling delivers more than half a dozen memorable reveals over the course of a very steamy hour and a half.
