Cody Lightning is a Semiole-Cree sort doing nothing much in a nowhere town when his dad dies and he has to head out into the world in Four Sheets to the Wind (2007). When Cody finds his old man dead in his easy chair of an overdose, he's understandably bummed—and he decides to honor daddum’s last hankering to be buried in the local pond. Having fulfilled his filial functions, Cody trundles off to Tulsa to start his life anew, visiting his older sister, Tamara Podemski, who's barely getting by (but is getting more than enough sweet, sweet hooch), and start a possible romance with lady-next-door Laura Bailey. Four Sheets to the Wind is writer-director Sterlin Harjo's first film—and one of the few to focus on contemporary American Indian life.
