The British may pride themselves on being staid and stoic and stiff of upper lip, but their national character is also shot through with an appreciation of and predilection for over-the-top comedy heavy on leering sexual hijinks, as exemplified by the escalating intellectual absurdity and lowbrow libido laughs of I’ll Never Forget What’s ’is Name (1967). An advertising executive cracks up one morning, grabs an axe, renders his desk to kindling, dumps the wife, scrapes off his three mistresses, dedicates his mental prowess to a doomed literary magazine, and falls in love with that journal’s simpering and sexy secretary. Then things become somewhat improbable and get out of hand, but the film remains highly entertaining.
