A year after conquering the pop charts with their hip-hop double platter Speakerboxx/The Love Below, Outkast rappers Big Boi and Andre 3000 team up for the big-screen extravaganza Idlewild (2006). A colorful musical set in the Prohibition-era Deep South, the film tells of the soulful, ivory-tinkling Percival (Andre Benjamin), a piano man who hones his craft in a liquor-soaked speakeasy managed by his pal Rooster (Antwan Patton). Things get dicey when a lowdown gangster (Terrence Howard) tries to wrest control from the barkeep, but the boys buckle down to save their beloved watering hole. Director Bryan Barber may be going for a 1920s feel, but there’s nothing antiquated about the skintillating scenes featuring sexy costars Karen Dyer, Paula Jai Parker, and Paula Patton.
