Most of us in the modern secular world scoff at the quaint belief in miracles, but when the chips are down, most of us hope some form of divine intervention might come along. The title heroine of Julie Walking Home (2001) goes about her daily business very much like any other young mother might, even as her marriage veers toward the rocks. When cancer arrives to doom the woman’s young son, she is spurred to seek out extraordinary help, traveling to Poland in search of a man reputedly blessed with the power to heal with the touch of his hands. The mother’s pursuit and faith in the extraordinary brings out magical strengths that lay dormant within herself all along.
