When a guy goes to a sports movie, he is usually given license to cry like a baby girl. But Slap Shot (1977) elicits tears of laughter, making it not only one of the best sports films ever made but perhaps one of the funniest flicks too. Paul Newman stars as the manager of a third-tier hockey team that wins back fans through ultra-violence. After recruiting the Hanson Brothers--three greasy-haired, four-eyed, marginally intelligent bruisers--the blood flows as fast as the seats fill. The humor is raunchy, and Melinda Dillon exposes her upturned darlings for her first and only onscreen skin. That's enough to land your puck in the penalty box.
