Made ten years after the historic day in August 1989 when 600 East Germans broke through the Austrian-Hungarian border, inspiring tens of thousands of German citizens to follow suit, Einfach raus (1999) is a stirring docudrama about a key turning point in the fall of Eastern European communism. Directed by Peter Vogel, the film captures the excitement and fear of a group of East German refugees trapped at the German embassy in Hungary. Much of the material is dry and sobering, but Vogel takes pains to communicate his characters’ joy in convincing fashion. Look no further than Inga Busch’s performance as a Busch-baring refugee who takes time to splash around in her birthday suit.
