Dame Judi Dench and Jeremy Irons head the all-star cast of Langrishe, Go Down (1978), an acclaimed domestic drama based on a novel by Aiden Higgins and adapted by Harold Pinter. A BBC play of the week, the tale is set in 1930s-era Dublin, where the titular heroine (Dench) has begun a torrid love affair with a dashing German scholar (Irons) despite the protests of her two sisters. Director David Hugh Jones captures the furious passion of the protagonists’ whirlwind love affair by coaxing young and buxom Dench out of her corsets in a few lurid flashback scenes.
