Timing is everything in comedy and romantic tragedy, and there’s nothing funny about the lust-fueled, love-tainting entanglements of The Adultress (1973). A wife is beautiful, she is young, she wonders if fate might have given her more if she had made different big decisions. She sighs, the winsome moment of doubt passes, and she carries on in the safe, tender embrace of matrimony. Unless the attentions of a handsome, mildly dangerous stranger are extended to her at that precise second when her musing has ventured into yearning. Then she may act upon a short-lived impulse and set in motion consequences that will haunt her for a lifetime.
