Review

The nine-part mini-series Captains and the Kings follows the life of a poor Irish immigrant named Joseph Francis Xavier Armagh (Richard Jordan) who comes to the United States in the mid-nineteenth century. Loosely based on real-life patriarch Joseph Kennedy, Armagh rises to prominence as a blockade runner during the Civil War then marries the daughter of a senator (Patty Duke). The mini-series also features future TV stars Blair Brown and Jane Seymour and marks the debut of Beverly D’Angelo, who has a nip slip in the third episode due to unforeseen variances in the field of vision granted by new TV-set designs. Captains and the Kings will have you slappin’ your thing.
