Any uncastrated male knows that a restaurant's primary appeal is often some attraction other than the establishment's food. The Yale-educated makers of Waitress! (1981), for instance, seem to believe that the presence of three slightly slatternly and totally comely service personnel can make up for all manner of deficiencies--such as plot, budget, and box-office star power--in this frolicsome flick of eatery depravity. Add alcohol to a lecherous cook and inebriate a gaggle of gaga customers, and the half-drunk horn dogs at home will have to agree: A trio of type-ahh tarts helps the motivated diner to focus with his big, blind eye and accept a richness of faults.
