Fabio Fulco plays an air force pilot with a serious love for planes in the Mexican tearjerker Alas rotas (2002). Nothing makes Ayala (Fulco) happier than careening through the skies at supersonic speeds, but when his doctor diagnoses him with a brain tumor, the military decides to ground the young airman. Carlos Gil’s melodrama proceeds to probe the ways in which Ayala learns to adjust to an earthbound civilian’s life. Naturally part of his adjustment involves the opposite sex--Ana Alvarez and Monica van Campen wager that a little bit of skin will make their flyboy feel better, and it’s hard to see how either vixen couldn’t offer a big pick-me-up.
