A friar’s arrival in a provincial Spanish town sparks a flurry of disastrous occurrences in the historical drama Beatriz (1976). Gonzalo Suárez’s risqué film chronicles the blowback that occurs when the titular heroine (Sandra Mozarowsky) and her ailing mother (Carmen Sevilla) become similarly obsessed with a man of the cloth. The friar finds a way to deviously manipulate their feelings to suit his ends, but the balance of power shifts drastically with the arrival of a handsome young student. Suárez is apt at depicting the vicious backstabbing that occurs when women fixate on the same man, and he keeps the atmosphere sizzling by keeping Mozarowsky, Sevilla, and co-star Nadiuska out of their clothing for delectably long stretches.
