Frequently referred to as El Extensionista, the Mexican social drama Sangre en el Campo (1991), or Blood in the Country, stars Eduardo Palomo as an agriculture engineer who’s assigned to complete a period of compulsory social service in rural Mexico. The “Extensionista” extends a hand to the downtrodden rural population but discovers that they don’t want any help from outsiders. Nevertheless, Cruz (Palomo) is unable to turn a blind eye to the fact that local farmers are being fleeced by corporate interests. Juan Fernando Pérez Gavilán’s drama is based on an acclaimed stage play, but the director does what’s necessary to lend the material some cinematic flare. Case in point: a slo-mo sex scene with Latina goddess Claudia Guzmán.
