The groundbreaking Italian melodrama Les Amants de Vérone (1949) chronicles Angelo (Serge Reggiani), a glassblower from Murano, who is cast in a production of Romeo and Juliet opposite Georgia Maglia (Anouk Aimée), the daughter of a fascist magistrate. As the play develops, Angelo and Georgia's relationship comes to parallel that of Shakespeare's doomed lovers. Aside from the neo-realist filmmaking style, what renders Les Amants de Vérone so remarkable are Anouk's extensive nude scenes. She looked plenty fine getting naked back in '49.
