Chewers of cliché are fond of saying that politics make strange bedfellows. The art of running for and holding public office also makes for strained family relations, few more so than the long-distance parenting in Skipped Parts (2000). A juicing, bed-hopping daughter is no help to a Southern gentleman aspiring to North Carolina’s governor’s mansion; so he exiles his flesh and blood to the wilds of Wyoming. The banished daughter’s wanton wiles thrive in the wilderness, and the totality of her self-involvement renders her even more remote to her own thirteen-year-old son than her distant daddy is to her. Naturally the boy knocks up his girlfriend, then runs into the girlfriend’s mother accompanied by the school’s football coach in the abortion doctor’s waiting room. For some kids, growing up would be easier if they were given the option to abort their parents.
