It’s a kill-or-be-killed existence in the world of Italian revenge flicks. The randomly inflicted terrors and brutal pessimism of Night Train Murders (1975) are realistic, nerve-wracking, and touted as inducing posttraumatic-stress symptoms in viewers who are hearty enough to survive a screening. This movie is a good test of character. If an acquaintance can sit through the scenes of eroticized humiliation, slasher rape, and sadistic infliction of merciless rage without squirming, then you are sharing the sofa with a sociopath. Get out of there fast, before the movie is over, or risk reenacting the particularly gruesome bits.
