Dreams come small to America’s trailer-park princesses, but these meager white-trash visions of a better life die hard. "Melba May," played broadly with camp conviction as a winsome and lose-some lass by indie crackerjack Park Overall, is the heroine of Sparkler (1998). Though satisfying to look at, Melba May is dissatisfied with the cultural and social offerings of her high-desert hometown, and she hits the highway to track down a trio of dudes who had impressed her as conduits to excitement and validation during a freak barroom encounter. Of course, nothing goes right or comes easy for Melba, and she learns valuable life lessons during more than one subsequent freak encounter.
