Women prefer to be treated with respect by males, but they will endure a fair amount of disparagement from the right guy and will even countenance the occasional hint of abusive behavior from a great guy, which is why when mild-mannered law student Glynn Turman slaps his bitch around she immediately straightens up and assists him in exacting the vengeance sought by the ghost of a 1940s gangster who has inhabited Glynn’s 1970s persona. Set in New Orleans, J.D.’s Revenge (1976) attempts to expand the parameters of the blaxploitation formula common to the typical Afrocentric cinema offerings of the day, veering into horror/thriller territory but never venturing far from a funky soundtrack.
