Three generations of Brazilian women struggle to escape the clutches of their remote, sand-swept home in the elegant adventure drama The House of Sand (2006). Andrucha Waddington’s film opens in 1910, as pregnant Áurea (Fernanda Torres) and her mother (Fernanda Montenegro) are being led across the desert by the insane Vasco de Sá. De Sá dies soon after, stranding the two women for a period of nearly six decades. As the film progresses, Montenegro assumes the role of the aged Áurea, while Torres returns as the woman’s adult daughter. The various identities get a bit muddled, but there’s no mistaking Torres’s lithe frame as she writhes around in the sack with an extremely fortunate Seu Jorge.
