’70s audiences were probably baffled when Walter Matthau and Carol Burnett starred in the serious drama Pete ‘n' Tillie (1972) with only fleeting moments of comedy. In fact, things get downright tragic after these middle-aged late bloomers get married and have a kid. It’s an insightful film from respected director Martin Ritt, and we’re happy to report that the dreary realism includes some sexy shots of Burnett strolling around in her underwear.
