In The Bonfire of the Vanities (1990), wicked Wall Street wizard Sherman McCoy’s (Tom Hanks) lusty lifestyle is thrown for a loop when he and his mistress hit and run over a black boy in the Bronx, leaving him in a coma. Seizing this cruel crime as his opportunity to make a name for himself, headline-hound journalist Peter Fallow (Bruce Willis) takes advantage of the sad scene, exposing everyone involved to the wrath of each grumpy gus in the city, including the Al Sharpton-like political sharpshooter Reverend Bacon (John Hancock). When the fornicating Sherman is forced to face his fate, his hedonistic life soon goes up in pub(l)ic flames. With a Bonfire of babes such as Sex in the City’s Kim Catrall and the ever-mammy Melanie Griffith on the scene, don’t be surprised if you find yourself feeling a little vein while watching.
