Based on a novel by Maurice Shadbolt, the far-flung coming-of-age story Among the Cinders (1983) is set in contemporary New Zealand, where a detached teen (Paul O’Shea) experiences a rocky journey to adulthood. Estranged by his strict, religiously devoted parents, Nick (O’Shea) tries to escape their influence by spending time with his friends in the rugged Kiwi backcountry. But when one of his friends dies in a freak accident, the young man finds his world in shambles. Forced to leave home, he moves in with his grandparents and watches his troubles continue to mount. Growing up isn’t easy, but at least the unfortunate youngster has got a blonde bombshell to help him with his budding sexual desires. Rebecca Gibney plays a free-spirited, rarely clothed seductress who treats the teen to flashes of her breasts and buns.
