Career counselors present government positions as attractively secure employment opportunities, offering guaranteed retirement benefits, excellent health coverage, and something close to a no-firing policy that grants life-long immunity from unemployment lines. On the flip side, there is a dark facet to civil service, a shadowy realm of semi-official agencies whose operatives can be terminated without a moment’s notice with fatal health impact and where the only acceptable mode of resigning a commission is from within a body bag.
