The French biopic The Children of the Century (1999) chronicles the turbulent 19th-century romance of the philandering poet Alfred de Musset (Benoît Magimel) and cross-dressing novelist George Sand (Juliette Binoche), who was once called a slut by Charles Baudelaire and whose real name was Baroness Aurore Dudevant. When the happy couple vacations to Venice, George becomes ill and Alfred leaves her in the hotel with a handsome doctor while he goes out gambling and whoring.
