Christmas films and romantic comedies are traditionally the bane of the heterosexual male, especially when such pictures are of English origin, but Love Actually (2003) dares to combine all three deadly strains and comes up with a lively celebration of chance, happenstance, and aging gay pop stars who ultimately don’t give a hoot if the entire universe knows that they are raging poofs. The hijinks and sly winks extend all the way up to the highest offices of government, when the bachelor Prime Minister himself falls under the erotic sway of a lowly tea girl. Tears of laughter will mix with tears of poignancy in this slick but soulful heart tugger that is destined to live forever in date-movie posterity.
