Farcical fun and games under highly improbable circumstances are the forte of the English. Even director Ronald Neame, best known for the nail-biting tension of his disaster thrillers such as The Odessa File (1974) and The Poseidon Adventure (1972), couldn’t resist taking a fling at straight-faced lunacy, resulting in the goofy goings-on of Foreign Body (1986). When a clerk at a seedy hotel in India is fired after walking in on a naked lady, his only option is to pack his turban and fly off to the United Kingdom. But unemployment is at chronic highs, and the only positions available are for doctors. Following the logic of the dry, slapstick wit perfected by the British, it’s only a matter of time before the immigrant clerk is the personal physician to the Prime Minister.
