Review
Humor comes from hardships, particularly the hardships of a group of wacky college kids who by hook and crook are suckered into taking part in a white-water river-rafting race. The crew of saturated scholars who float toward fame and glory in director Robert Butler’s guffaw-inducing Up the Creek (1984) are a mix of misfits and dipshits who are dunked in fast-flowing misadventure and deep-swirling absurdity, which results in waves of hilarity. The effect of bucketfuls of cold water on flimsy female apparel is also used to grand, glandular effect.
