Certain life events are apt to drastically and permanently alter a person’s approach to everyday existence, none more so than cancer. A New York City lady journalist is jerked right out of the hustle bustle of big city newspaper life in My Breast (1994). Prior to a visit to her doctor, the woman’s biggest problem was a boyfriend whose devotions left something to be desired. After consulting with a specialist and being informed of a malignancy growing on her chest, her entire concept of what constitutes a hardship is pulled entirely inside out. A portrayal that is simultaneously unblinking and sensitive, My Breast allows viewers a glimpse of mortality’s unavoidable reality, without all that unpleasant chemotherapy.
