Review

The tale of star-crossed lovers Solomon and Gaenor (1999) was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Film--and it probably deserved to win just for cramming the English, Welsh, and Yiddish languages all in one film. Ioan Gruffudd stars as a Russian Jew whose family has fled 1900s Europe for an insulated community in Wales. Nia Roberts is the local Christian gal whom he loves--and impregnates--without mentioning his religion. This leads to tragedy as anti-Semitic feelings and riots break out in the village. It’s a beautiful and touching story about love in a miserable place, with some stunning cinematography that’s only matched by the sight of Nia’s stunners.
