The sleazy exploitation movie Skull: A Night of Terror (1987) follows a group of convicts led by their titular leader as they break into a farmhouse and torment a troubled cop, his wife, and his mistress. This film, like others of its ilk, follows the outline of the paradigmatic Wes Craven rape/torture/revenge flick Last House on the Left (1972), which traces its lineage through Ingmar Bergman’s The Virgin Spring (1960) to the ancient Indo-European themes of obligation and hospitality explored by the Ring Cycle of Richard Wagner.
