Imagine the pitch meeting for 8 Mile (2002): "It's a combination of Rocky (1976) and A Star Is Born (1937), with the number-one white rapper in America starring as a white rapper who wins an all-black hip-hop championship." More improbable, it's a great movie, with Eminem putting in a strong performance, albeit as himself, and two sexy turns from Kim Basinger and Brittany Murphy. You don't have to love rap, though it helps, to enjoy this up-from-the-slums-of-Detroit, feel-good streetwise flick. Though the film is a bit skingy, Brittany steams up her scenes with a potent sexuality, and Kim, as the white-trash mom, is the kind of tramp every little boy wishes he had to come home to.
