Based on a true story, Heavenly Creatures (1994) stars Melanie Lynskey and Kate Winslet as Pauline Rieper and Juliet Hulme, a pair of teeners who go from friends to co-conspirators when they carry out a plot to kill Mel's ma. Peter Jackson's film follows them from first meeting to final gruesome beating, beginning at their school in Christchurch, New Zealand. Mel is an angry, imaginative, working-class sort who doesn't much like any of her classmates until high-born Kate (and her lovely sweatermates) transfers in from England. The dreamy duo gets cozy quickly, creating elaborate fantasy worlds that fuel their art and their friendship. But it's not long before both sets of parents are worried about the closeness of the kids. What better way to stop your parents from taking your friendship away than to kill them?
