A crooked cop in a desperate race to clean his dirty tracks and a craven coward who is forced into compromising circumstances that demand he perform with superhuman bravery are each in themselves the stuff of high-impact suspense. Raw Nerve (1999) combines both elements when a cop under investigation for laundering cash calls in a favor from a scaredy-cat college teacher whose life the cop had saved in the distant past. Throw in South American drug lords with a penchant for throat-slitting vengeance, toss in a few hot, breast-baring broads susceptible to the charms of the rogue lawman, and garnish with a side of inoperable cancer that renders the bad detective impervious to considerations of health or well-being, and you have the recipe for a bang-up entertainment.
