Even small-minded, hate-filled, insanely violent racists can respond to love. Skinhead Edward Norton, with thirty pounds of extra muscle packed on specifically for the role, is the flaring fascist punk who propels American History X (1998) into the depths of moral bankruptcy and reaches from that bottom for a grasp at redemption. Norton creates one of the least sympathetic characters in cinema history as a black-bashing, prison-bound thug. Once locked away, the wilding white-power patsy reevaluates his beliefs and his prejudices. His only hope is to get out of the joint in time to save his younger brother from partaking of the same soul-shrinking poison.
